JTHS Drafting Students Bring Home Top Awards and Advance to State Competition at IDEA Regional Drafting Competition

Students brought home top honors with four students qualifying for the state competition.

Joliet Central and Joliet West High School drafting students competed at the Illinois Drafting Educators Association (IDEA) Regional Drafting competition recently held at Joliet Junior College on March 6. The students brought home top honors with four students qualifying for the state competition which will be held on April 11 at Illinois State University. Students were selected to compete based on grades, attendance, and their overall performance in the drafting classes.


“Our students competed against a variety of high schools in different drafting divisions with 96 competitors in the competition this year,” said Joliet Central Drafting Instructor Dale West. “I am extremely proud of our students who placed in their division and are going to the state competition at ISU.”

Joliet Central students Joe Holmes and Chris Trevino are advancing to the state competition. Holmes placed 2nd in the 3D Modeling division and Chris Trevino placed 2nd in the Assembly Modeling division. In addition, Sam Goin placed 3rd in the Introduction to CAD division and Cesar Escutia placed 3rd in the 3D Modeling division.

Joliet West’s Miguel Gutierrez took 1st place in Intro to CAD and Jose Torres took 1st in the Architectural CAD Division, both qualifying for the state competition.

“Jose and Miguel worked very hard to prepare for this competition,” said Joliet West Drafting Instructor David Popek. “There are many very bright students in our region and I am very proud of Jose and Miguel. I am sure they will do well down state.”
