JWHS Consumer Economics Class Receives Visit from Chinese Foreign Exchange Students

Joliet West High School Consumer Economic classes recently received a visit from three Chinese foreign exchange students.

Joliet West High School Consumer Economic classes recently received a visit from three Chinese foreign exchange students. The three students, Karen Wang, age 17; Jenny Yu, age 15; and Shirley He, age 17; are attending high school in the area as part of an exchange program. JWHS Consumer Economics classes are currently studying a variety of world-wide economic systems and students were able to find out, first hand, what it is like to live in China. The girls presented a PowerPoint that depicted various landmarks in China and then answered questions from the class.

“I thought this would be a relevant learning experience for my students,” said Consumer Economics Instructor Deborah Leininger. “My students studied the role of American Business in China prior to the visit, and they were amazed by some of the first-hand information they learned from the girls. They discovered that students in China attend school for a much longer day, some until 6 p.m. and one until 9 p.m. They also discovered that no calculators are allowed in the math classrooms. The whole experience brought economics concepts to life for the students.”

The girls will return to China the beginning of June.
