K Ribs BBQ Offers Family Style Platter Amid Coronavirus Shutdown

JOLIET, IL — Joliet's daily traffic has dried up since the start of the new coronavirus outbreak, with businesses and offices temporarily closing or making employees work from home. But, K Ribs BBQ, a one-of-a-kind restaurant, is staying open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

The bad news is that walk-ins are down, especially during lunch time. The good news is that family-style takeout orders are up, restaurant owner Dillon Kim told Joliet Patch Thursday. On Wednesday, for instance, Silver Cross Hospital called in an carryout order for 40 employees.

Kim said the Korean Bulgogi Beef remains one of the most popular takeout orders. The restaurant is heavily promoting its $59.95 K BBQ Platter.

"That is really popular right now," Kim said. "It's good for four or five people."

Kim said he and his kitchen employees are striving to provide all family-style orders with generous portions for their takeout and delivery orders. He also wanted the community to know that the restaurant offers discounts for hospital workers, firefighters and police officers.

K Ribs BBQ also posted the following message in capital letters on its website: "DEAR CUSTOMERS, IN LIGHT OF CURRENT EVENTS, WE ARE TAKING EXTRA PRECAUTIONS WITH THE PREPARATION OF OUR FOOD AND ARE SANITIZING OUR FACILITIES MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY."

K Ribs BBQ, which opened at 221 N. Chicago St. in October 2018, delivers within a 5-mile radius of downtown Joliet, as long as the delivery order is at least $25, Kim said.

The restaurant is located next to the Joliet Junior College's Culinary Arts Building. Besides deliveries, Kim said there is ample downtown parking available for customers who want to order takeout inside the restaurant or pick up their order themselves.

The restaurant's Korean-style menu includes smoked baby back ribs and rib tips. Customers can order online or call in an order at 779-242-1152.

K Ribs BBQ was one of the first local restaurants to fill out Joliet Patch's simple survey to let everyone know they are open and their current hours of operation. About 130 Joliet businesses have been added to Patch's list so far.
