Kevin Deon "Pookie" Underwood

Born on March 2, 1963, in Joliet, IL, to Mary Louise (Cornelius) Underwood and Walter Williams. Pookie’s time for life expired suddenly on Monday, September 10, 2013, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Illinois.

At an early age he attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Isaac Singleton Sr. He later joined St. John M.B. Church and remained a member until his passing.

Pookie attended Joliet Public Schools and graduated from Joliet West High School. He later attended Moler Barber and Beauty College in Joliet, Illinois, and received his barber’s license. His love spread throughout the town over the years. He was a devoted family man and a lifelong self employed barber. Pookie enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary L. Underwood and Walter Williams, and his maternal grandparents, Houston and Doretha Allen.

He leaves behind a devoted life partner, Shirley “Poo” Walsh, with whom he shared five children, Mary, Kevin, Iisha, Sharquece and Takya; three grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished, Zaidea, Zariah and Amara. He also leaves to cherish his memories, two sisters, Sonya “Trish” and Lisa; five brothers, Cornelius Jr., Scott, Larry, Vincent and Marion “Tony”; three close childhood friends, Raul Weeks, Phillip Sanders and Bryan Martin; a special aunt, Doris Bruton, and uncle, Greg Allen; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from 5:00-7:00PM and Wednesday, September 18, 2013, from 10:00-11:00AM at St. John M.B. Church, 104 E. Zarley Blvd., Joliet, IL. Service at 11:00 AM, Pastor Herbert Brooks, Jr. officiating. Private interment.
