Loaded Gun Thrown By Fleeing Motorists: Joliet Police

Joliet officers tried to pull Alfredo Magana's car over for a traffic violation around 4:20 a.m. Saturday near Collins Street, police say.

JOLIET, IL — Two young men from Joliet were responsible for tossing a loaded gun out of their car window during a chase that began near Collins Street, Joliet police said.

The incident happened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday near Collins and Irving Streets.

Joliet police arrested 22-year-old Alfredo Magana on charges of aggravated fleeing while a passenger, Saulo Chavez-Hernandez, 19, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition and having no Firearm Owner's Identification card.

Patrol officers tried to pull over Magana's car for a traffic violation, but the 22-year-old sped away, police reports state. Eventually, the two were stopped near Parks and Ward Avenues and Magana was identified as the driver, police said.

"Officers located a loaded handgun in the roadway along the path of the pursuit," police reports reflect. "Chavez- Hernandez indicated ownership of this firearm to officers."

Bail for Magana, who lives in the 700 block of Longwood Drive, was set at $50,000. As for Chavez-Hernandez, who lives in the 500 block of East Liberty Street, his bail was also put at $50,000.

Chavez-Hernandez was able to post bond on Sunday evening, while Magana remains in custody, jail logs show.
