More Misery In Joliet: Broken Ruby Street Bridge Has No Timeline For Emergency Repairs
The closure is necessary to replace equipment and electrical components that failed Sunday afternoon.

JOLIET, IL — The City of Joliet should consider changing its motto from the City of Champions to the City of Broken Bridges. The Cass Street Bridge has been closed since summer and won't open again in 2026. Now, the Ruby Street Bridge is out of commission.
The Illinois Department of Transportation issued a press released on Monday afternoon revealing that the Ruby Street Illinois 53 bridge over the Des Plaines River, in Joliet, is closed for emergency repairs. The closure is necessary to replace equipment and electrical components that failed Sunday afternoon.
The evaluation of the necessary repairs is ongoing. A more definitive timeline for when the Ruby Street Bridge can reopen will be announced later, according to IDOT.
