A weekend of treasure hunting in the Illinois countryside, known as "More on 34," will soon be held along more than 100 miles of U.S. Highway 34.  Now in its 9th year, the annual cavalcade of commerce through northern Illinois is set for Father’s Day weekend, June 13 and 14, 2014. The event includes yard sales, antique shows, craft shows, flea markets, and farmers markets in communities from Galesburg to Aurora.  "It's fun to promote what's now known as 'the granddaddy of all linear yard sales,' said Bob Navarro of the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Mendota and Earlville, along the "More on 34" Route, are located within the Heritage Corridor. He says "More on 34" is a weekend playing host to bargain hunters, antique buyers, pickers and collectors from across the United States for treasure hunting across five counties.  Planners report that the sales extravaganza is expected to draw nearly 15,000 shoppers.

Organizers are calling all vendors and sellers to list their sale on the event website at www.moreon34.com. Shoppers will pull this website up before they hit the road, or while traveling Highway 34 in search of sales or fundraisers.  Vendors or sellers who list themselves on the website will have a unique opportunity to easily reach an extremely vast audience. Listings will be made by community, address, and items for sale so that everyone can find exactly what they’re looking for. Last year, over 150 people registered on More on 34’s website and it was a huge success.

The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau is working with planners from LaSalle, Henry, Bureau and other counties to promote the event, which runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and attracts visitors to Corridor towns of Mendota and Earlville.   Other participating communities along the way are Galesburg, Wataga, Oneida, Altona, Galva, Kewanee, Neponset, Sheffield, Wyanet, Princeton, Dover, LaMoille, Leland, Somonauk, Sandwich, Plano, Yorkville, and Aurora.

During "More on 34," sales can be found in parking lots, in city parks, and in many yards all along Route 34.  Sales typically run from 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m., but some open earlier or remain open later. A few sellers even begin their sales on Thursday and continue through Sunday.  According to coordinators of the event, everything can be found along the route, from antiques or garden produce and plants to unique “junque.”  Thrifty shoppers will hit the road with patience, plenty of perseverance, a full tank of gas, and cash in hand.  Many of the local communities involved are planning special events and activities, so interested persons are encouraged to plan their weekend to take in all the event has to offer.  To view a list of the sales posted and to plan your trip down the back roads, visit www.moreon34.com or call 877.436.7926.

Event planners promote the concept that More on 34 offers something for everyone in the family.  They also urge interested sellers to join in the fun by loading up the trunk of a car with items and setting up a booth along the route.  The event offers a great opportunity for fundraising by church groups or local organizations, while also allowing people to experience the unique aspects of the small towns along Highway 34.  The multiple Convention and Visitors Bureaus involved in co-promoting the event are working to ensure participants are familiar with the hotels and motels in the region, as past years have found many visitors who prefer to experience the sale over a two-day period.

The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau creates economic opportunity through tourism marketing and development.  For information, call 800.926.CANAL (2262), or go to www.HeritageCorridorCVB.com.
