BRAIDWOOD, IL —The Braidwood Police Department said officers arrested a man from Wilmington this week following a seven-minute-long standoff between the man, identified as David E. Brandon, and the officers as Brandon remained inside his car, yelling, with multiple loaded guns near his side.

Police used a drone during the standoff.

"The utilization of the drone in this incident likely saved lives," Braidwood's Police Department proclaimed Friday on Facebook. "The initial intentions of the motorist are unknown as he sat armed with a .32-caliber pistol and refused to step out of the vehicle for seven minutes until Comet 1 engaged him."

According to Braidwood, around 6 a.m. on Monday, officers tried to stop the Wilmington motorist, who had suspended registration for his 2004 GMC Yukon. Brandon refused to pull over and kept driving west on Kennedy Road from Route 129, authorities said.

Police said that Brandon drove another half-mile before he stopped in a parking lot in the 500 block of Kennedy Road, and that's when the standoff began. At 6:14 a.m., Braidwood's officers deployed their drone, which is called Comet 1, and they flew the drone toward the driver's open window.

"The drone footage captured Brandon raise his tinted window until it closed," the police agency said. "Brandon then retrieved a loaded .32 Smith and Wesson revolver from his right pocket and placed it in the center console. Brandon opened the door and exited the Yukon."

Braidwood police said Brandon refused to comply with the officers' commands and resisted arrest. An officer deployed a Taser to incapacitate Brandon, and he was taken into custody. The officers searched the Yukon and seized the revolver and another loaded handgun he kept in the center console, the police pointed out.

Braidwood police told Joliet Patch on Friday that they did not obtain a mugshot for Brandon.

He was arrested on charges including aggravated unlawful possession of a gun, resisting arrest, fleeing or eluding a police officer and operating a vehicle without registration. He was given a notice to appear in the Will County Courthouse under the Illinois SAFE-T-Act, the agency outlined in their Facebook press release.
