JOLIET, IL — One local minister told Joliet's City Council at Tuesday night's meeting that he counted 29 existing liquor establishments on Jefferson Street. A political science professor said there is a direct correlation between violent crimes and liquor stores.

In the end, the Joliet City Council voted unanimously, 8-0, to reject a proposal from Ivan Torrijo to open a new liquor store at 1308 West Jefferson Street. He wanted to open Angie's Liquors in the same commercial plaza and shared parking lot as the David Nelson Exquisite Jewelers, 1312 West Jefferson St.

Councilman Larry Hug made the motion, and he was seconded by Councilwoman Bettye Gavin. Several people in the audience clapped in agreement after the Council vote.
