New Orleans Gumbo In Joliet? Amigeaux's Selling 5 Gallons A Day

JOLIET, IL — Louisiana natives John Thompson and Colton Trimmer recently introduced a new wintertime dish to their menu at Amigeaux's Sophisticated Street Food —New Orleans style chicken and sausage gumbo.

Since adding the New Orleans gumbo in the middle of October, it's become one of the most popular selections on the menu, Thompson told Joliet Patch during an interview last week.

"As a side, we've had a great response, better than we expected," Thompson. "We'll have it through Christmas or New Year's."

Amigeaux's unveiled the New Orleans gumbo to coincide with the cold winter months. Gumbo is typically a popular meal in the fall and winter, Thompson said.

A cup of gumbo is $3.79 and a bowl is $5.99. It's served with white rice and green onions.

How much New Orleans gumbo has Amigeaux's been making over the past month?

"We're selling about five gallons a day," Thompson replied. "We're working toward bringing more of a Cajun flair to our menu. When it gets closer to winter, we'll bring in a few more winter hearty items."

Amigeuaux's Sophisticated Street Food opened July 7 in the former Arby's restaurant at 2307 West Jefferson Street, right next to the Popeye's chicken.

Amigeaux's is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It's closed on Sundays.

"More and more people are coming in every day, and I think people are starting to realize we're not fast food," Thompson said. "We're quick service. Everything is made from scratch, and it's fresh every time."

The Jefferson Street restaurant features a drive-thru window, indoor dining and now, Amigeaux's customers can place their orders online for pickup.
