A detached garage caught fire in the 500 block of North Hebbard Street at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Joliet Battalion Chief Rob Schroeder said firefighters received the call at 6:36 a.m. There were no cars inside the garage at the time, but there was a motorcycle, which Schroeder said didn’t have any damage.

“One of the occupants of the house came out to go to work and saw smoke coming from the roof of the garage,” Schroeder said. “She opened the service door and saw what appeared to be a fire next to or near the wood burning stove. She grabbed the garden house and tried to go in and put it out but was unsuccessful. There was too much smoke and too much fire by then. She closed the door and dialed 911.”
Schroeder said the fire is under investigation, but it appears that the wood-burning stove may have started the fire.
