Route 59 Walmart Thief Can't Outrun Joliet Police: Cops

The Plainfield man was busted at Joliet's Route 59 Walmart store.

JOLIET, IL - When 28-year-old Diante Williams enters the Joliet Walmart store on Route 59, the store's security team is on high alert. On Saturday, Williams landed in the Will County Jail after he tried stealing merchandise by putting items into his duffle bag that he brought into the Walmart, according to police reports.

In the end, the Plainfield man is starting off 2019 as a Will County inmate.

Joliet Police arrested him for burglary and obstructing a police officer. Officers were called to the Walmart on Route 59 for a retail theft in progress around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.

"Upon arrival, officers met with staff who stated they recognized a subject that has stolen from them in the past. Staff stated they saw Williams grab a shopping cart and take a duffle bag from a shelf. Staff stated Williams then started grabbing items from the shelves and stuffing them in the duffle bag," Joliet Police said.

Eventually, Williams decided to take his chances of walking out of the Walmart store, he walked out the south doors, reports show.

And that's about when the Joliet Police cars arrived at the Walmart.

Williams decided to give up the merchandise, he was going to make a run for it, according to the police.

"When Williams noticed that the officers were present, he pushed the shopping cart in the officers direction and took off running through the parking lot. Officers ordered Williams to stop and told him he was under arrest but Williams disregarded the officer’s commands, and continued to flee. Williams was eventually caught and taken into custody. Williams was then arrested for the above offense," Joliet Police said.

Williams has spent the past three days, including New Year's, at the Will County Jail. The Plainfield man has a $10,000 bail, but he doesn't have $1,000 to post as bond, jail logs indicate.

Williams, formerly of Chicago, shows a Planfield mailing address in the 1200 block of Courtland Circle, according to police reports.
