JOLIET, IL — Joliet police arrested a 30-year-old city resident who is accused of stealing a sex toy from the Crest Hill Taboo store on Plainfield Road last month. Kevin R. Reed, who lives in the 1200 block of Joliet's Hague Court, was booked into the Will County Jail around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Last week, a Crest Hill Police Department detective obtained a bench warrant from Will County Judge Ken Zelazo to arrest Reed, who turns 31 next week.

According to the criminal complaint, Reed is accused of stealing merchandise on Sept. 13 from the Taboo store at 1916 Plainfield Road, the merchandise being a sex toy, "with the intention of depriving the merchant permanently of the use and benefit of such merchandise," the court records show.

Crest Hill Police Chief Ed Clark told Patch that Reed initially entered the Taboo store without wearing a face mask and the store refused to allow him entry. He returned a few minutes later wearing his mask, and he also was required to provide his ID to enter the store, which is required for all guests of Taboo, the chief said.

According to Clark, Reed stole an item of merchandise from the store that was valued at $200. Crest Hill's chief said he did not want to disclose more details about the item that was taken. Through video surveillance cameras as well as the fact that Reed provided his ID to the store, detectives were able to obtain a bench warrant for the Joliet man's arrest.

"He took the item and walked out of the store," Chief Clark told Patch on Monday.

Reed has previously been convicted of shoplifting. He has a 2018 retail theft conviction from Will County, his latest criminal complaint indicates.

Reed's bail has been set at $20,000. As of Monday afternoon, Reed remained in the county jail, unable to post the necessary 10 percent.
