Shooting At North Raynor Ave. Leads To Man's Arrest

Jonathan Diaz, 32, tried to shoot a 37-year-old man inside a car on May 8, but his gunshots missed, Joliet police said.

JOLIET, IL — For more than two months, a shooting along Joliet's North Raynor Avenue and Ross Street remained unsolved. Then, this past weekend, 32-year-old Jonathan Diaz was put in handcuffs by Joliet police, charged with being an armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and reckless discharge of a gun.

Diaz lives in the 800 block of North Raynor Avenue, which is very close to where the shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. on May 8.

That night, Joliet police learned that a man fired multiple rounds at a vehicle near North Raynor Avenue and Ross Street. The 37-year-old man inside the car was not struck by the bullets, and neither was his car.

The victim drove off and called 911 himself.

Following an extensive investigation, Joliet police detectives identified Jonathan Diaz as the suspect in this case, police reports state.

On July 15, detectives got an arrest warrant for Diaz, and a Will County judge set bail at $250,000.

Around 9 p.m. this past Friday, Diaz was sitting inside a parked car, close to his residence, at the CVS Pharmacy on Plainfield Road.

As of Tuesday evening, Diaz remained in the Will County Jail, unable to post his bond. He needs $25,000 cash to regain his freedom.
