Boy, 13, Identified As Juvenile Killed In Reedswood Shooting

Two other juveniles were wounded by gunfire.

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Police Department is asking for the community's help, particularly with video surveillance cameras, in connection with Thursday night's west-side shooting that killed one juvenile and injured two others. The Will County Coroner's office identified the deceased victim as 13-year-old Javier Cayetano of Joliet.

Cayetano sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the Thursday night shooting, according to the coroner's office.

Joliet Police issued a press release mid-morning Friday explaining that the shootings were called in at 7:43 p.m. in the 300 block of South May Street, which is the Reedswood area.

When the police arrived, they found three juveniles who were shot. Two were treated and released from the hospital but the third juvenile died, police said. Joliet Police told Patch the ages of the other juvenile shooting victims are not being released at this time.

"The Joliet Police is actively looking into what occurred and for those responsible," a news bulletin states. "At this time, it does not appear to be related to any school incident."

On Friday morning, 1340-AM radio's WJOL reported that the shootings happened following a fight that had occurred at the Dirksen Junior High School in Joliet District 86.

So far, no arrests have been made.

However, Joliet Police have sent out a notification to people in the areas of Jefferson Street, Raynor Avenue, Interstate 80 and Midland Avenue "looking for anyone who has surveillance cameras or Ring cameras," the police advised. "Our investigators are looking for any activity that might have been captured between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m."

Several Joliet Police cars swarmed a west side neighborhood south of Jefferson Street on Thursday night after an apparent shooting in an alley way. Patch was told the shooting happened around 8 p.m. By 9:15 p.m., there were still seven police cars on scene. Unconfirmed reports indicate there may have been three gunshot victims.

The crime happened in the area of May and Morgan Streets.

Around 9:30 p.m., Deputy Joliet Police Chief Darrell Gavin told Joliet Patch "right now, it's an active and ongoing investigation that's in its early stages."
