JOLIET, IL — The city of Joliet has put up several large signs around the perimeter of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Joliet, near the busy intersection of West Jefferson Street and Houbolt Road. Documents indicate the redevelopment project calls for a Speedway gas station and convenience store that would also welcome semi-trucks.

"An automobile fueling canopy is proposed in the front and a truck fueling canopy is proposed in the back ... Truck parking is not being proposed as part of this development," documents on the city of Joliet's website indicate.

Late Tuesday morning, Joliet Patch visited the site capture several images to give readers a better idea of the area for the proposed truck stop and gas station on Joliet's west side.

Last October, the Joliet City Council approved plans for a Love's Travel Center at I-80 and Briggs Street, but the Love's project on the city's east side has been moving at a snail's pace and hasn't even started construction yet.

Documents on Joliet's website indicate the Joliet Park District, owner of the airport property across the street, "is still in opposition to the proposed fueling station due to the proximity of their grass landing strip."

On the other hand, it's possible that several of the existing businesses across the street from the Universalist Unitarian Church parcel would welcome the added traffic.

Some of the current tenants at the strip mall for the Rock Run Center include Johnny's Gyros & Beef, Video Slots and Lily's Massage.
