St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Baseball Team Wins IESA State Championship for Second Year in a Row

JOLIET—St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School’s baseball team defended its 2013 title by winning the Class 1A IESA State Championship on Saturday, October 4, 2014. The Giants ended their season with a 16-2 record including a Regional Championship victory over Mazona-Verona-Kinsmen and a Sectional Championship win over Grand Ridge. These wins helped the Giants earn a trip to Peoria to compete in the State Championship as one of the top eight Class 1A teams in the State.
In the State Quarterfinal and Semifinal, the Giants beat Jacksonville Our Savior and Bartonville Monroe respectively to secure their spot in the championship game against Effingham St. Anthony. St. Paul went on to win with a score of 5-3 to earn the State Title.
The Giants team is comprised of 7th and 8th grade students. They include: 8th graders, Josh Bolek, Caden Boggetto, Max Cullen, Dolan Glasgow, Christian Heino, Dylan Hensley, Jack McGinnis, Reed Ohlson, Sebastian Pantoja, Dean Procarione, and Alex Vera; 7th Graders, Vinny DeFilippo , Danny Mangun, Owen Roesel, Cameron Seeman and Nathan Seeman.

St. Paul Head Coach is Mike Melone. He was assisted by Vinny DeFilippo, Pat McGinnis and Mike Roesel.
Coach Melone said, “Winning back-to-back State Championships is a great accomplishment for our program. It’s a direct reflection of the commitment our school has for the development of the student athlete, not only in athletics, but also in education and faith.”
