Stateville Inmate Says Prison Officials Won't Protect Him From Murderous Gangsters

The prisoner says he is locked up for shooting a "well known gang chief," and there is now a contract out for him.

A man locked up in Stateville says prison officials won’t take steps to protect him from murderous gangsters looking to avenge his attempt to kill a “high ranking member of their organization.”

Pierre Catlett, 60, petitioned the Will County court to order Stateville Warden Tarry WIlliams and others to place him in protective custody

Catlett said he was found guilty of “shooting a well known gang chief of the Gangster Disciples street gang” and as a result there is an “open contract” out for him.

“Upon Mr. Catlett being arrested and placed in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial, Mr. Catlett was severely beaten by members of the Gangster Disciple and Black Gangster Disciple street gangs for the shooting of one of the gang’s hierarchy,” he said in his petition to the court. “Mr. Catlett was hospitalized for this beating.”

And as soon as he got to Stateville, “he began to receive threats of violence and even death by members of the street gangs mentioned afore, as word had been sent within the Stateville Correctional Facility to kill Mr. Catlett.”

While in the Crest Hill prison, Catlett was approached by at least five other inmates, including ones named “Dollar,” “Big Wheezie” and “Polo.” These other prisoners threatened to either beat or kill him, he said.

Catlett said he informed prison officials of his dire predicament but they “refused to afford him protective custody.”

Catlett also said he has a brain tumor.

Catlett was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 2010 gun attack. He also served state time in the 1980s for stolen vehicle convictions.

Illinois Department of Corrections Spokesman Tom Shaer said he had “no comment on this particular legal filing” but added, “In general, it is important for the public to know there has not been an inmate homicide at Stateville Correctional Center in nearly six years.”
