Suspect 'Smacks' Man, Steals Case of Beer, Cops Say

Suspect Derrick Cole made it only a short distance while trying to run with a 30-pack of Milwaukee's Best, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man who tried to make off with a man's 30-pack of Milwaukee's Best Tuesday night has been charged with robbery, Joliet police said.

Derrick Ramon Cole, 42, of 611 E. Cass St., was at the Splish-Splash Laundromat at 112 E. Jackson St. when he spotted the victim walking with his case of beer at about 7 p.m., Cmdr. Al Roechner said. Cole offered the man a drink from his pint bottle of liquor, and "smacked" him when he declined, he said.

He then grabbed the case of beer and took off running, Roechner said. He didn't get very far before dropping it and continuing to run, he said.

Police officers found him behind Certified Warehouse Foods, 118 E. Jackson St., and charged him with robbery and battery. He was also arrested on a parole violation warrant issued by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Cole is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.
