
JOLIET, IL - The Joliet Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man. Keonte A. Cook, 19, a Joliet resident, was pronounced dead at 2:58 a.m. Friday. He was fatally shot in the 1400 block of North Center Street. Cook suffered a gunshot wound and his death is being treated as a homicide, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.
An autopsy is set for Friday. Joliet Patch has left a voicemail with Al Roechner, deputy chief of investigations at the Joliet Police Department, seeking more information about the homicide.
Patch will update this story as more becomes known. About a month ago, Patch reported there was a drive-by shooting on a week night about two blocks away, in the 1200 block of North Center Street. Will County Jail logs show that Cook, who lived in the 1400 block of North Center Street, was sentenced to jail for two days on March 26-27 after pleading guilty to the charge of obstructing a peace officer. The criminal complaint states that Cook "knowingly obstructed the performance of Officer James Kilgore" after the officer gave him a lawful command "to quit fighting ... he continued to push past the officers to keep fighting," the complaint states.
Also, in September, the Joliet Police Department busted Cook on the offense of driving never having been issued a license, driving without insurance and resisting arrest. Cook was scheduled to appear for sentencing in July.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday afternoon, there was gunfire that erupted over on Joliet's east side at the Fairview Housing Development. In that incident, one car and two townhouses were struck by guns believed to come from a semi-automatic weapon. To read that story in the Joliet Patch, go here.
Cook's slaying would be the fourth slaying in Joliet since New Year's Eve.
On March 9, Izzy's bartender Danny Rios was fatally shot inside of the bar on Theodore Street. Patrick Gleason has been charged with killing Rios.
And on New Year's Eve, two teenagers were fatally shot inside a car parked in the 900 block of Rosalind Avenue, over on The Hill. The victims were 15-year-old Victor J. Arroyo and 17-year-old Aliyah M. Salazar. Arroyo died from multiple gunshot wounds while Salazar died from a single gunshot wound.
