JOLIET, IL — On Monday night, the Joliet City Council seated new members Suzanna Ibarra and Cesar Cardenas, said goodbye to outgoing members Terry Morris, Bettye Gavin and departing two-term Mayor Bob O'Dekirk. The biggest event of the night, though, was the introduction of Joliet's new mayor, Terry D'Arcy, president of D'Arcy Motors.

The following speech was given by D'Arcy to his fellow elected officials and members of the community:

"Fellow Councilmen, city administrators, staff, residents of Joliet, ladies, and gentlemen. I am truly humbled to be here tonight, sworn-in as your next mayor of Joliet.

"I want to begin by thanking the voters of Joliet for electing me this honor to serve as your mayor.

"When this journey began last year, I told residents that I wanted to improve Joliet and make it a better place to live, not just for today, but for our tomorrow. We need a place for our young families as well as for our senior citizens, and everyone in between.

"I meant every word of that and with the support of the City Council and the leadership of our city staff, I am sure we can create a new path and one we can all be proud of.

"Most importantly, my being here tonight would not be possible without the support of my wife Sue, our children, and grandchildren…. Thanks to all of you for everything. I also want to thank my mom Jeannette who is here tonight for guiding me to this moment with your wisdom and love.

"Over the course of the campaign, I laid out a vision and plan to move Joliet forward and address the concerns of our citizens. With your help, we can accomplish these goals and make our city the world-class city it deserves to be.

"We have much work ahead of us and I look forward to working with our newly elected council members and those who have been with us many years, to make this vision a reality.

"Anyone who knows me knows I am a person who listens and makes the best decision for the interests of those I serve. I intend to continue being that kind of leader as your mayor.

"In closing, I want to again thank everyone for their calls, emails, and well wishes. I am humbled by the outpouring of support. It is truly a privilege to serve, and I look forward to getting started. Thank you."
