Thompson Takes Tumble In Jewel, Joliet Man Sues For $100K

Thompson's lawyer John Schrock of Plainfield seeks more than $100,000 in damages from Jewel and The Matworks Company.

JOLIET, IL - At 6:15 a.m., June 15, Joliet resident Dean Thompson took a tumble inside the Jewel grocery store in the 1500 block of North Larkin Avenue. This week, Thompson put Jewel on notice that he wants more than $100,000 for his slip and fall inside the Joliet grocery store. Plainfield personal injury lawyer John Schrock filed a civil suit this week at the Will County Courthouse accusing Jewel and The Matworks Company of negligence.

Schrock's lawsuit states that "Matworks owed a duty of care to customers of the Jewel Store to not to create (sic) any hazards to customers of the Jewel Store and to warn customers of the fact that floor cleaning operations were being conducted."

According to the lawsuit, Thompson was inside the Jewel on Larkin Avenue shortly after 6 a.m. Matworks employees were also inside the Jewel using a cleaning machine that utilized water. There were no signs placed on the floor notifying customers that cleaning was taking place.

The "Matworks employee or employees using the cleaning machine left a puddle of water in a shopping aisle used by Jewel customers," the lawsuit notes.

That's when Dean Thompson apparently "slipped on the puddle of water and fell" to the ground. According to the suit, the Joliet man "as a result of the slip and fall ... sustained injuries of a personal injury."

However, Thompson's lawsuit is devoid of any specifics or details surrounding the Joliet man's apparent injuries. For instance, the lawsuit against Jewel makes no mention of Thompson being hospitalized.

"Wherefore, Plaintiff Dean Thompson prays for entry of judgment in his favor and against Defendant Jewel Food Stores, Inc. in a sum in excess of $50,000," Schrock wrote, repeating the same phrase against The Matworks Company in his four-page lawsuit against both defendants.
