Toddlers On Life Support After Crash Kills Pregnant Mother, 1-Year-Old

Charges are pending against another driver in the fatal crash.

UNINCORPORATED BEECHER, IL — Two boys, ages 4 and 6, remain in critical condition a day after a horrific crash that killed their pregnant mother and 1-year-old brother. Lindsey Schmidt, 29, was taking her three sons to a vacation Bible school when their Subaru SUV was struck by a pickup truck near Corning Road and Yates Avenue Monday morning. One-year-old Kaleb Schmidt and his mother were pronounced dead following the crash.

Will County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies visited Comer Children's Hospital, where the 4- and 6-year-old remain in critical condition. The 6-year-old has been placed in a medically induced coma, and both are on life support, police said.

Police said the driver of the truck, a 25-year-old man, failed to stop at a stop sign. He suffered a large laceration to his arm and underwent minor reconstructive surgery Monday at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, police said.
