Three of the district’s schools – Troy Middle School, Troy Craughwell Elementary School and Troy Shorewood Elementary School – were classified as exemplary, which is the top designation and consists of the top 10 percent of schools statewide that have no underperforming student groups.

This is the second year the ESSA designations were issued, and the second year Troy Middle School and Troy Shorewood received exemplary status.

The district’s other four schools – Troy Cronin Elementary, Troy Heritage Trail Elementary, Troy Hofer Elementary and William B. Orenic Intermediate School - were designated as commendable, which is the second highest achievement level.

“We are very excited for all of our schools,” Troy Superintendent Dr. Todd Koehl said. “These designations represent a combined effort from staff, students, parents and community to create opportunities for success. We could not be more proud of this team effort.”

The designations are mandated by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, which is a law required of all American public schools. They are determined by analyzing the proficiency tests PARCC, SAT and DLM-AA, as well as student growth, English language progress and chronic student absenteeism numbers.

The report also noted that Troy Community School District 30-C schools scored significantly higher than the state average in science, with a 75 percent proficiency; ELA (English language arts), with a 51 percent proficiency; and math, with a 44 percent proficiency.

The pupil/teacher ratio at the district averages 17:1
