Troy 30-C Spanish Clubs make candy sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos

Students learn about Mexican culture

Spanish Clubs are in full swing at all five Troy Community School District 30-C elementary schools. Recently, club sponsor for Troy Cronin Elementary School and Troy Craughwell Elementary School, Silvia Sarver, taught her students about the significance of the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, holiday in Mexico.

Making candy sugar skulls is a tradition in honoring the holiday that celebrates loved ones who have passed away, Sarver told them. The candy represents the sweetness in life, she said.

The students cast the sugar skulls one week, allowed them to set up, then decorated them the following week.
