Troy Students Celebrate School Spirit Even During Remote Learning

Troy Middle School, a Troy Community School District 30-C school, finds "T.M.S. Spirit Awards" a popular competition this year

Troy Middle School students found ways to show their school spirit this year, even while learning remotely from home.

The school began its “TMS Spirit Awards” program shortly after the school year began, celebrating homerooms that had the most students participating in particular themes.

The first theme of the year was, “Troy will Prevail,” and, “Troy Rocks,” where students wore Troy spirit wear or colors. Other themes have included Hat Day, Pink-Out Day for Breast Cancer Awareness, and wearing patriotic colors in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Troy Middle School student Calloway Walsh is in teacher Julie Brandolino’s homeroom. She began participating in Troy’s hybrid learning plan this week and said the Spirit Awards were something she enjoyed every week when she was remote.

“It was definitely something I looked forward to doing on Fridays,” she said.

Winners so far include the homerooms of teachers Julie Brandolino and Allison Rose, Grant Barker, Nancy Buckley, Traci Fagan, Colleen Fals, Michelle Fraser, Kristy Grabowski, Raylene Grossi, Trisha Koerner, Donna Miller, Jen Munday, Michelle Nahorski, Kelly Pullara, Jen Silverman, Danielle Vita, Dr. Barbara Will-Henn and Elizabeth Zucker.

The program is coordinated by T.M.S. staff Kelly Papesh, Sandy Smith, Staci Dahlberg and Grant Barker.

“Whether we’re together or connected by computers, we are still Troy Middle School,” Papesh said. “We have pride in ourselves and in each other, and this has been a fun way for us to celebrate that.”
