Troy students explore professions during Career Day
Shorewood Elementary School combines Career and Touch-a-Truck Day
At its first school-wide Career and Touch-a-Truck Day, Troy Shorewood Elementary School students were able to talk to adults of several professions and get a feel for various occupations. They also explored such work vehicles as a vacuum truck, a crane, a mini excavator, a snow plow, a grinder dozer, an armored SWAT truck, a fire truck and ambulance, police vehicles and even a race car.
They also heard career-focused presentations and got to know a police K9 unit.
“We would like to thank our parents and community presenters,” one of the organizers of the event, school counselor Kellie Calderon, said. “This event could not have been successful without them. Career development is an important foundation to all of our students’ educational experiences and helps connect what we teach our students in the classroom to real life experiences.”

Calderon added that some of the careers presented required advanced degrees, while others were careers they could begin straight out of high school.
