In a brand new athletic program to Troy School District 30-C, the Troy Trojans Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team recently ended its season 4-0-1, wrapping up with a 2-2 tie with Brooks Middle School.

Emilio Cerda scored the first goal in Troy soccer history at Richland Middle School.

Jaden Alipio led the team this season, with five goals, while Alex Amezcua had three goals, and Vinny Sandon recorded two goals. Brian Preciado and Owen Siebert led the defense. Christian McCullough was the goalkeeper.

The Trojans won their first and second matches of the year, defeating Richland Junior High School 6-2 and Ira Jones Middle School 3-1, respectively. The team also achieved a 4-0 win over Minooka Junior High School and a 3-2 win over Hubert H. Humphrey Middle School.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer is new to the district.

“It’s been a popular offering in its first year,” said Troy Athletic and Activities Director Meagan DeGroot, “with 81 fifth- through eighth-grade boys initially trying out for 28 positions.”

Girls’ soccer is a spring sport.

“We found there was a very large need for soccer in our area,” DeGroot said. “Several parents have requested that Troy begin a soccer program. Many of the kids play competitive soccer, and they wanted it in our schools.”

Coaches are Colleen Lewis and Adam DeGroot.

“This is something we have been really excited about bringing to Troy,” Lewis said, “and we have been thankful for the opportunity. The guys worked hard day-by-day to improve as individuals, as well as a team. Minooka was a big game for us this season and was something that we worked to prepare for. Seeing the result of that match was such a testament to the guys on this team. It has been so fun watching the success of the Boys’ Soccer Team in their inaugural season.”

"Coach Lewis and I are so proud to be a part of the first soccer team here at Troy,” Coach DeGroot said. “The boys did an excellent job of laying the foundation of the Troy soccer program through their hard work, dedication and success on the field. We had a core group of eighth graders that demonstrated excellent leadership that helped us be successful in our inaugural season."

Team members are Jaden Alipio, Alex Amezcua, Logan Boburka, Alan Campagne, Emilio Cerda, Jaydon Diaz, Brayden Golebiowski, Nick Kelly, Carlos Leon, Daniel Lopez, Christian McCullough, Marcos Montes, Freddy Navarrete, Brian Preciado, Vincent Sandon, Owen Seibert and Julian Trejo.
