The closures are tied to the company's decision to sell its Midwestern markets to Sprint Nextel. U.S. Cell customers will need to switch phones to keep their service.

U.S. Cellular retail stores in Joliet and Shorewood will close by the end of May as part of the company's sale of its Midwestern markets to Sprint Nextel.

Only five locations will remain open, the nearest to this area being located in Darien, an employee at the Shorewood store said.

The local stores are at 2836 Plainfield Road and in the Louis Joliet Mall in Joliet and at 922 Brookforest Ave. in Shorewood. All told, the company will close nearly 70 outlets in Illinois and Indiana in a process that will start May 17 and could be completed in about two weeks, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.
