JOLIET, IL — A 42-year-old Joliet man who repeatedly ran into oncoming traffic last week along the busy stretch of Plainfield Road, then attacked the staff at St. Joe's hospital, is now lodged in the Will County Jail, according to Joliet police.
On Monday, Arturo Contreras was brought to the Will County Adult Detention Facility to face his felony aggravated battery charges. During the previous week, Contreras was staying at the Chicago Behavioral Hospital in Des Plaines.

When officers approached Contreras, he was angry and appeared to be under the influence of unknown substances, according to police spokesman Dwayne English.
A Joliet Fire Department ambulance responded to Plainfield Road, and Contreras was given an ambulance ride to St. Joe's hospital and that's where problems ensued, according to police.

"Contreras was belligerent with hospital staff and began fighting with them in the emergency room," English noted. "While being evaluated by a doctor, Contreras spit in the face of a doctor."
At that point, Joliet police placed what's known as a custodial hold on Contreras after it was learned he would be admitted to the hospital.
A resident of the 1100 block of Joliet's North William Street, Contreras was booked into the county jail at 11:25 a.m. Monday.
