Visitation Wednesday For Ken Kaupas, 2014 Will County Candidate For Sheriff

Kaupas, 58, served as chief deputy of special operations at Will County Sheriff's Office prior to running for sheriff as a Republican.

SHOREWOOD, IL - Visitation will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Overman-Jones Funeral Home in Plainfield for Ken Kaupas, 58, who died Saturday after battling cancer. Kaupas was born in Chicago and later lived in Lemont and Plainfield before settling in Shorewood. Kaupas spent 30 years at the Illinois State Police achieving the prestigious rank of captain. He retired in 2009 and then went to work for his cousin Paul Kaupas at the Will County Sheriff's Department, serving as chief deputy of special operations from 2010 to 2014. In 2014, Ken Kaupas won the Republican primary and then ran against Democrat Mike Kelley, losing in a close race in the November general election.

"Among his many interests, Ken loved playing golf, softball, card games and the occasional good cigar. He also enjoyed riding his Harley and watching the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls for whom both teams he provided security details," his obituary noted. "He truly enjoyed spending time with his son and coached Brady’s Little League team for several years. Ken will be deeply missed by all who called him their friend."

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Overman-Jones Funeral Home and interment will take place afterward in Oswego at Risen Lord Cemetery. Overman-Hones is at the corners of Route 59 and Route 30 in Plainfield.
