Fairmont Ave. Murder Victim ID'd By Coroner

Joliet Police have a possible suspect in the young woman's death.

JOLIET, IL - A 28-year-old woman was killed Monday morning at the city's Fairview Public Housing complex and authorities say she died after being stabbed in the back. On Monday night, the Will County Coroner's Office of Patrick O'Neil said the homicide victim has been identified as Marcedes M. Flakes. An autopsy was performed on Monday.

The Joliet Police Department is investigating the death as a homicide and police may have a suspect in custody, sources told Patch on Monday. The Joliet woman was found out in the street in the 1500 block of Fairmont Avenue.

O'Neil said the woman was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox where she was pronounced dead at 7:40 a.m.

On Monday afternoon, Joliet Police officials released a statement regarding the crime.

“Officers were dispatched to area of Fairmont and Cardinal regarding a female subject down. Upon arrival, officers observed the victim laying in the street with life threatening injuries. Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital where she later succumbed to those injuries. Investigators are currently pursuing leads on a person of interest."

One source, who lives at Fairview, said the incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. and people started screaming and walking over to where the body was located. The resident told Patch the stabbing victim had run out of her apartment unit and collapsed outside by the street.
