$10 Million-Worth of Marijuana Found in Frozen Avocado Packages

Investigators found flat bricks of marijuana covered in avocado pulp in some of the packages.

About 2,100 pounds of marijuana worth $10 million were found hidden in frozen avocado pulp packages March 4 in the 8400 block of West 47th Street in Lyons.

Workers at the facility reported a suspicious shipment that had instructions for an urgent pick up to the Sheriff’s Street Crime Suppression Unit, according to Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart.

A narcotics police dog found marijuana inside the pallets, and the Drug Enforcement Agency and the McCook Police Department were called to help.

Investigators found flat bricks of marijuana covered in avocado pulp in some of the packages, packed inside the 1,512 boxes of the shipment, the sheriff’s office reported.
