LTHS to present "Freedom of the City"

LTHS Theatre Board presents "Freedom of the City" March 15th-17th.

The Lyons Township High School Theatre Board proudly presents “Freedom of the City” by Brian Friel. Faculty member Ann Dudek is the director and junior Becky Valek, of LaGrange Highlands, is the assistant director.

Freedom of the City, by Brian Friel, explores “The Troubles,” the long-growing and often violent conflict between the Irish and English over territory and authority in Northern Ireland. While Friel began writing the play before the events now known as “Bloody Sunday,” he finished the play after that influential and tragic day in history. The play sets the events for February 10, 1970, in the town of Londonderry, Northern Ireland. A forbidden peaceful protest march ends with heavy military action. Three protestors find unexpected refuge in a normally guarded Mayor’s Office in the Guildhall building.  Tensions escalate as rumors about the occupants grow; an ultimatum is issued, and a surrender is attempted. The end result is three executions. The play moves swiftly between the events of the day and the subsequent “tribunal of inquiry” into those events.
