The Children's House Montessori School Took The Classroom Outside!
We have spent most of the winter growing and cultivating as part of our activities for The Green Education Foundation's Project Green Week Contest. How wonderful it was to actually welcome the warmth of spring with outdoor classroom activities. Using the Metal Insets (a Montessori material) as a template, we used materials gathered on nature walks and constructed the shapes! The children were given the challenge to find sticks, but they had to be a certain size. We showed them the shortest stick and the longest stick, and they went off in search of sticks. We put all the sticks in order from smallest to largest, just like the Red Rods are used inside the classroom. The children made pictures with sidewalk chalk. From their observation corner inside the classroom we have been watching as people walk by. Some people change things, some people walk over our creations, and some people walk around them. We are going to begin to tally and chart how people respond this week. So, if you are walking along 31st street and you see a stick or a pine cone, remember, we are probbaly watching you!
