Brookfield Zoo's Female Lion Dies Shortly After Mate

Both lions arrived at zoo in May 2008. Isis apparently suffered a fall two weeks after Zenda's death.

BROOKFIELD, IL — Brookfield Zoo's female lion, Isis, died Tuesday after sustaining injuries in an apparent fall, the Chicago Zoological Society announced Tuesday. Her death comes less than two weeks after the loss of her mate, Zenda, the zoo's male African lion, who was euthanized because of age-related issues that impacted his quality of life.

Animal care staff checked on the 14-year-old Isis in her outdoor habitat shortly after 9 a.m. Monday morning, and all appeared normal, according to a zoo news release. However, upon returning a little while later, staff saw her lying on the floor of the habitat's moat. It appeared that Isis had fallen and suffered significant injuries, the release said. Despite immediate and intensive treatment by the veterinary staff, the decision eventually was made to humanely euthanize her Tuesday.

“The safety and well-being of the animals in our care is our utmost priority,” Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of animal programs, said in a statement. “Although it is unclear what caused her fall, we are reviewing all aspects of this tragic occurrence.”
