Deported Man Returns, Injures Lyons Cops: Prosecutors

He has been sentenced to prison and is subject to removal again.

LA GRANGE, IL – A native of Mexico who had been deported five times for his crimes returned to Lyons and injured officers last year, federal prosecutors said.

Manuel Alberto Cortes Cuan, 38, has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for illegally crossing into the United States after being deported, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

On June 17, 2025, Lyons police were told about a car identified in a theft investigation in a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

When police tried to detain Cortes Cuan, he vigorously resisted arrest, causing injuries to himself and two officers, prosecutors said.

His previous convictions were for theft, escape, trespassing, aggravated assault and aggravated DUI, prosecutors said.

In April, Cortes Cuan pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful re-entry after removal. U.S. District Judge LaShonda Hunt sentenced him last week to 14 months in federal prison.

The conviction subjects him to removal from the United States.
