1956 was the first year of the Antique Show & Sale in La Grange. To put this in perspective, in 1956 Life Magazine put out an issue that extolled the virtues of the Perfect Woman during the Eisenhower era. The ideal woman was a middle-class housewife, 32 years old, and lived in the suburbs after having gotten married at age 16. In addition to being a terrific mom and an exceptional wife, she also did volunteer work, hosted at least twenty-four dinner parties a year and she helped raise money for charities. And, one such charity, the First Antique Show in La Grange, had its start in 1956, organized and staffed by the women, all of them perfect I am sure, of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in La Grange. And, now 55 years later, the Annual Antique Show continues and will be visited by Perfect and not so Perfect, Men and Women, young and old!

This year, we will have our 3 floors filled with an exquisite array of merchandise from over 33 magnificent dealers. Antique jewelry, silver, textiles, vintage couture, books, crystal, glassware, porcelain, furniture, prints, pewter, and antique collectibles are just a few of the many items the dealers will be offering for show and sale. In addition, crystal and china repair will be offered while you shop. So, if your search is for the perfect treasure, one that is quirky, a pure piece of art, something that just speaks to you and touches your heart, this show is for you. And, in our modern realization that we must be kind to our Earth, Antiques are very earth friendly, they've basically been recycled for years and years and years and over and over again.

Even the church itself is well worth the visit, thought to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the Midwest. Several striking features of Emmanuel are its magnificent memorial stained glass windows which flood the parish with dazzling color, dramatic flying buttresses, great ribbed pillars, elaborately carved altar rail and choir stalls, a baptismal font with four stones from the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea and a 63 rank Casavant organ that was installed in 1970. Originally, a Victorian gothic structure featuring a Tiffany altar that was exhibited at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, it was replaced in 1926 after a fire completely destroyed the original building. The new church, which still stands today, was designed by John Tilton, architect and son. When founded, the church it was built in the epicenter of La Grange, the name translating to "God with us", was thought to symbolize this centeredness.

This year, the 55th Annual Antique Show in La Grange, hosted by Emmanuel Episcopal Church, will take place February 24th, 25th and 26th, 2011 at 203 South Kensington Avenue. Located just 4 blocks west of LaGrange Road, a short walk from the train station, the Antique Show is an excellent get-away whether you live close by our need an easy escape from the city.

Proceeds of the Antique Show and Sale go to many charitable organizations both within the community and to Episcopal charities as well. This was the intent of the women's auxiliary over a half century ago and the tradition continues. Rich in history, plus excellent shopping, elegant meals, and a charming tea room in which to relax and enjoy a sip of tea and wonderful desserts, this event is not to be missed. And, on your way out, there's that wonderful Baker's Shelf to purchase something special to take home. See you there!

Donations at the door are $8. For any additional show information, please contact our church office at (708) 352-1275 or visit www.emmanuel-lagrange.org.
