As part of La Grange Public Library’s rotating display of local and area artists, John Hill of Tigerhill Studio will exhibit pieces from his vast portfolio. A “Meet the Artist” reception will be held on June 9 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm. His work can be viewed in the lower level gallery space from the evening of June 1 through July 15.
For over thirty years, Hill has been producing beautiful and memorable aerial and architectural photography, delighting people with his views of the North Shore and Chicago. This exhibit will include images of the Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston, IL. Shot in all seasons, the series took over four years to complete.
Hill and his wife learned to fly in the late ‘60s, while he was stationed in North Carolina as a Marine Captain and started an aviation club using planes from the base. He started shooting in the air with a 50-lb. Military surplus K-22, using specialty aerial film to shoot buildings he was working on as an engineer.

During that time he was performing the impossible task of flying the plane and taking pictures at the same time. Hill said, “When you turn sideways, the wind catches your elbow and the airplane goes up. So you stomp the rudder, get the airplane down, take your shot, and do it all over again. It’s very difficult to compose. Now I use a pilot. He spends his time flying and I spend my time shooting.”
