Get All Shook Up at the Theatre at the Center

Elvis and Shakespeare combine for a funny, charming musical at the Theatre at the Center

If someone mentions Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” you probably don’t image leather jackets and Elvis music, but that’s just what happens in “All Shook Up.” The hit Broadway musical makes its way to the Theatre at the Center with a sensational cast filled with Jeff Award and national-tour veteran actors.

All Shook Up is set in a conservative Midwestern town. It’s 1955 and everyone is spending the long, hot summer trying to make his/her dreams come true. From Natalie’s dream to leave the small town to Miss Sandra’s efforts to big some culture to the community, people are spinning as they try to figure out which way to go.  Along comes Chad, a roustabout in a black leather jacket, who turns the sleepy little town upside down.

Elvis’ songs are the soundtrack, so there’s plenty of temptation to sing along. At times the music seems too big for the intimate theater, which is a perfect way to enjoy the concert-like performance. Two dozen classic Elvis hits are as much a character as the actors throughout the show.
