Since the 2010/2011 school year, Gurrie Middle School, located in La Grange, has adopted a building motto of "We Make a Difference!" GMS sets a goal that all students and staff will take part in 5+ service hours each, that helps make a difference in their community, state, nation, or globally. This tradition has continued and the 2019/2020 school year, marks 10 years of the program.

Over the past nine years, GMS students have performed 33,520 hours of service. GMS students completed a total of 3,465 service hours during the 2018/2019 school year. Five students completed over 75 hours and two students completed more than 100.

"We know from research that service learning can increase academic growth and success, lessen the achievement gap, and create a more caring and tolerant culture," said GMS Principal Ed Hood.
