Have your own tips to share? Tell us in the comments!

Kathy Deets, owner of The Barker Shop in La Grange, and Theresa Napolitano, daycare manager, have provided a few tips for pet owners searching for a lost dog.

  • Spread the word: talk to people, post on social media, use flyers. Walk, drive or bike around the neighborhood and stop to talk to everyone you see. People want to help.
  • Contact Lost Dog Illinois.
  • Contact local pet shops and centers and ask for help.
  • Call police departments and rescue centers every day for the first week a pet is lost.
  • Go to shelters and rescue facilities and physically look at the dogs there.
  • Leave an item of clothing nearby that smells like your home.
  • Never give up.

Deets said name tags and microchips help, and if you know you have a dog that is prone to run away, take extra precautions to make sure they’re well marked.
