LA GRANGE, IL – Lyons Township High School's teacher union president spoke this week about the lack of air conditioning in parts of the school's two campuses.

"The heat continues to be a major disruption in the educational experience of our students," Andrew Johannes, president of the Lyons Township Education Association, told the school board.

He said temperatures reached the upper 80s and lower 90s in the southwest corner of North Campus during August's heat wave.

"Also, many of the South Campus wings experienced disruptions in service due to the stress of the system," Johannes said. "Thankfully, the heat has subsided, but this will continue to be an issue until the entire buildings' environments can be regulated."

Over the years, the high school has been increasing air-conditioned space on both campuses.

As for rooms at the high school, 44 percent at North Campus and 30 percent at South Campus are without air conditioning or modern air ventilation systems, officials said recently.

For two days last month, the school dismissed students at 11:30 a.m. because of the heat.
