Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Summer Series opens this weekend

World-renowned Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comes home this weekend for its Season 37 Summer Series.

There’s something lovely about a warm summer weekend filled with dance, especially when it’s the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Summer Series. The world-renown dance company takes up residency at the Harris Theatre this Thursday, June 11 through Sunday, June 14.

Resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo created a new work for this event. This is his 14th original piece for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. The unnamed piece will stand along two audience favorites -- Extremely Close and Little Mortal Jump.

Extremely Close was Cerrudo’s second original work for Hubbard Street. This innovative work was developed in partnership with architecture students from the Illinois Institute of Technology. With music for a solo piano by Philip Glass and Daniel O’Halloran, this work is a lovely beginning to the all-Cerrudo program.

Little Mortal Jump, Cerrudo’s tenth work, moves in a completely different direction. Described as “cinematic,” Cerrudo takes the audience to a “mysterious place where dancers have dream-like encounters.”

The world premiere mixes classical and contemporary composers for an “imaginative exploration of pure dance brought to life by eight dancers.”
