Our never-ending winter is giving way to spring, even if it's just the Spring Series at the Harris Theater. This weekend the internationally-renowned Hubbard Street Dance Chicago warms Chicago with its first all-Kylián program.
If you're not familiar with Jiří Kylián, he is an award-winning choreographer, whose style has been described as "exploring the limitations and capabilities of space, body parts, entrances and exits, contrasts, and humor." Wikipedia lists his awards by noting that "in 1993 and 1999, he was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse as choreographer, one of the two only to receive it twice. In 2000 he received a Laurence Olivier Award for his artistic excellence and outstanding direction of Nederlands Dans Theater I's season at Sadler's Wells (the company itself also received an Olivier for Symphony of Psalms. In 2008 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands bestowed the prestigious Eremedaille voor Kunst en Wetenschap (nl) (Medal of honour for art and science) upon him.
The program includes four pieces. Petite Mort and 27'52" and company premieres Falling Angels and Sarabande. Called DIVE Deep, the two hour program runs March 13 - 16 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. What's great about the Harris Theater (205 E. Randolph, Chicago) is it is easily accessible from all expressways and Lake Shore Drive. There's plenty of underground parking, which is important in the winter that never ends.
