LA GRANGE, IL— The La Grange Public Library has begun offering appointments to enter the building for browsing and computer use as the latest step in a phased reopening.

In light of the library’s situation of offering communal spaces, equipment and resources that are repeatedly shared, borrowed and returned, a staff health and safety committee discussed concerns and reviewed best practices before reaching this point.

The library's current appointment process will let staff monitor building capacity and follow increased safety protocols. While inside the building, face coverings and social distancing will be required and enforced whenever practicable. For more information, check the library's information on appointments.

“I’m excited about our reopening and yet I realize 'being open' has a different meaning at this time. I’m happy patrons and staff are able to be in the building, see one another and browse our collections again. I’ve appreciated the precautions and considerations that our director and staff have put in place before reopening,” La Grange Public Library Board President Joyce Hagen-McIntosh said in a news release.

In-house services include:

  • Computer (laptop) use
  • Materials browsing
  • Printing and copying
  • Readers’ advisory
  • Reference assistance
  • Library card sign up/renewal

The library is currently unable to offer:

  • Meeting/study room reservations
  • In-person programs
  • Water fountains
  • Lower level access (including the digital studio)
  • Toys, iPads, computers and play space in Children’s Services
  • Indoor returns

“This is the library’s current phase of reopening, and we hope to be able to expand services in the future,” Hagen-McIntosh said. “The library staff and board are monitoring local and state infection rates, as well as adhering to direction from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the safety of our employees and patrons comes first. If we see infection numbers rising and Governor Pritzker limiting services again, we will adjust our operations accordingly.”
