La Grange Virus Cases Up 26% In Week: Health Department

La Grange's rate of increase is higher than the state's.

LA GRANGE, IL — The total number of coronavirus cases in La Grange since the beginning of the pandemic rose 26 percent in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had 831 virus cases, up by 169 from a week earlier. Before the last couple of weeks, La Grange had been seeing weekly increases of 3 percent to 5 percent for more than a month.

Since early October, the number of local cases has risen by more than 70 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

La Grange's weekly increases are similar to those in nearby towns — for instance, 24 percent in Darien and Western Springs.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in La Grange is 16, with the latest ones Nov. 9, Oct. 30, Sept. 4 and Aug. 27. All the local deaths have been those who were 68 or older, according to the medical examiner.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had 43.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people, worse than its neighbors. The figure compares to 27.1 in La Grange Park, 30.2 in Darien, 32.2 in Western Springs, 34.1 in Hinsdale, 34.3 in Clarendon Hills, 35.7 in Elmhurst, 36.1 in DuPage County, 41.2 in suburban Cook County and 41.9 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 573,6156, up 17.5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 10,742 state residents.

Nationally, 10.8 million people have caught the virus, up 11 percent from the week before. A total of 244,810 people have died from the virus in the United States.
