La Grange Virus Rate Hike Lowest In Months: County

LA GRANGE, IL — Last week, La Grange saw its lowest increase in coronavirus cases since October.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 1,712 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 42 from a week before, a 2.5 percent increase. The three previous weeks were, chronologically, 4.6 percent, 6.4 percent and 3.4 percent.

Since early October, La Grange's cases have increased by more than three times. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of coronavirus-related deaths increased by two in the last week, to 29. The latest death was Jan. 19. All the local deaths have been those who were 62 or older, according to the medical examiner.

The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.7 percent. Of the entire population of La Grange and La Grange Highlands, 9 percent have been infected with the coronavirus. About a tenth of 1 percent of the population have died from the virus.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had 89.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people, the worst among its surveyed neighbors. The figure compares to 63.4 in La Grange Park, 63.9 in Darien, 65.9 in Western Springs, 68.5 in Hinsdale, 72.7 in DuPage County, 74 in Elmhurst, 76.9 in Clarendon Hills, 80.4 in suburban Cook County and 83.8 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,101,819, up 3.5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 18,750 state residents.

Nationally, 24.9 million people have caught the virus, up 5.2 percent from the week before. A total of 416,010 people have died from the virus in the United States.
