Local Physician Named to Influential FDA Advisory Committee

Loyola neurosurgeon Christopher Loftus, MD, has been appointed to an influential committee that advises the FDA

Loyola University Medical Center neurosurgeon Christopher Loftus, MD, has been appointed to an influential committee that advises the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the regulation of neurological devices.

Dr. Loftus will serve on the Neurological Devices Panel of the FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee for a term ending Nov. 30, 2018. The committee advises the FDA on the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. Committee members are among the nation’s top experts in their specialties. While the FDA is not obligated to follow the committee’s expert advice, it typically does so.

A medical device is an instrument, machine, implant or other device used to prevent, diagnose or treat a disease or condition.

Dr. Loftus, who lives in Riverside, is a professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He has special expertise in the circulatory system around the brain and the treatment of both benign and malignant brain tumors, brain aneurysms, vascular malformations and blockages of the carotid artery.

Dr. Loftus, an internationally known neurosurgeon, has been named to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors list. He has written more than 600 research papers, books and/or book chapters, articles, reviews, abstracts and special presentations. Dr. Loftus also serves as treasurer of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, a professional, scientific, nongovernmental organization that represents about 30,000 neurosurgeons worldwide.
