LT Wrestlers Win Regional, Spot in Dual Team Sectionals

What’s your favorite month?  My guess—it’s not February. Most people would probably not even put February in their top 10 list of favorite months! 

But, high school wrestling fans approach each February with endless delight and anticipation. Each weekend, the excitement builds:

• Regionals …
• Sectionals …
• The BIG SHOW (state finals) in Champaign, IL

And if your team is really special, you might hope for a shot at the Dual Team State Championship in Bloomington, IL at the end of the month. 

's wrestling team is just that special this year:

•  10 returning starters from last season
• 7 standout, ranked wrestlers
• Team ranked No. 4 in Illinois in Class 3A
• Finished the regular season undefeated in the West Suburban Silver Conference—one of the toughest conferences in the state  

LYONS TOWNSHIP

The Lions faced the first test of the month on Feb. 5 at the Class 3A York Regional. The tournament was stacked, featuring six ranked teams. Each of LT’s 14 varsity wrestlers pushed through the day and overcame brutal competition to win matches and score team points. 

THE GOOD NEWS: 7 LT wrestlers advance this weekend to the Class 3A Leyden Individual Sectional on Feb. 11-12.

THE REALLY GOOD NEWS:  The team won big ... Regional champs for the second year in a row. That means all 14 wrestlers will compete against Mt. Carmel in the Dual Team Sectionals on Feb. 22. Go Lions!  

“Our conference is very competitive and we feel good about winning it, but our goal from the beginning of the year has been to win the regional, get downstate, and get a trophy," said Griff Powell, LT head wrestling coach.
